The Ericson 31 is widely respected as a very sturdy and capable pocket cruiser. There were approximately 70 E31s built and thus they rarely come to market.
This is the Bruce King design and it is one of the 21 Cruising 31's made. The first 21 Hulls were marketed as Cruising 31s and thereafter as Independence 31s. There is very little difference between the two models, with the Cruising 31 being distinguishable by its smaller cat-eye shaped fixed portlights and sloop rigging. All Independence 31s had opening portlights and most were cutter rigged with an extended bowsprit.
The interior is in exceptional condition. At 10'5" abeam the interior is very spacious for a 31ft boat. Close inspection revealed no indication of any leaks. The upholstery is in excellent condition. The galley is very well equipped and includes a custom front loading refrigerator in addition to the original icebox. The joinery throughout is very well executed and in very good condition. There is a unique arrangement that provides for a navigation station which can lift and stow allowing access to a comfortable quarter berth in addition to the starboard side settee that extends to a double berth. The V Berth is spacious for a 31 foot boat and also well appointed and executed. There is copious storage throughout the boat. Exterior The boat has been in the water for at least two years and reportedly the owner has not taken her out more than once in that period. Obviously, any buyer would be well advised to have the boat short-hauled to inspect the condition of the hull, rudder, and running gear. While the overall exterior of the boat is in good condition, some loving care and a good polishing will restore luster to the decks. The hatches are covered with canvas and have silent running solar vents. The sails appear in good condition as are the UV sail cover and roller fuller cover.
