Unlike most IOR designs, the soul of this boat is not possessed by satan. It is very easily driven and holds course with minimal weather helm. The elliptical rudder is about 7’ deep, so there is great control with minimal angle. It is important to note that the carbon rig reduced weight aloft by 1,000 lbs (453 kg). This provides an enormous gain in righting moment which makes the boat much more stiff upwind. Plus the lighter rig minimizes pitching so the boat is more stable under foot. While significantly lighter than the old aluminum rig, the carbon version is very, very stout; no need for running back stays except to shape the mainsail.
The boat is especially good upwind in AWS over 14knots. Performance in lower wind velocity is limited because I deliberately reduced the LP to 150%; originally it was 180%. Light air boat speeds could easily be corrected with a full size jib. The weakest point of sail was low TWS close-reaching; we solved this by adding a full-size Code-0 with top-down furling gear. We also added a 160% Code-1, built of 1.5oz nylon, for heavy air downwind. This sail attaches to the carbon spinnaker pole and allows excellent control downwind in big waves.
Per the notation on the S&S website, ARISTEIA's construction method was somewhat unusual. The T-bar longitudinals were installed with their flanges against the shell plating. Palmer Johnson felt this would reduce deformation of the topsides during welding and also reduce denting during her sailing life. Just before the boat was placed in storage in 1996, the back third of the boat was cut away, then rebuilt to an updated design, slightly wider per early IMS, all work done at PJ. She remained in heated storage from 1996 - 2010.

Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:
- Bottom coated with barrier coat, believe to be epoxy coal tar to prevent galvanic action.

- Two core samples of the hull adjacent to the keel boss on port & stbd sides done, both plugs measured approx. 38 mm diameter by 8 mm plate thickness. It is worth noting that the boat did just one winter in the ocean (SORC in late 1970’s), and since then used in fresh water exclusively, and then been in heated storage from 1996 until 2011. Owner has been vigilant in tracking protection adequacy.
