S/Y Desiderata is a sister to Malabar XIII – originally designed by naval architect John G. Alden in 1945 and built at Laynes Boatyard in Oregon in 1975. Known romantically as the ‘Last of the Malabars‘, they have a distinguished historical record in ocean racing. John Alden’s last personally owned racing yacht was Malabar XIII.
Ketch-rigged for efficiency and easy handling under sail, 66′ Desiderata is designed for pure speed during regatta racing. The Malabar XIII was a war baby – first constructed when materials were hard to find; but nevertheless, the design excelled in the 1948 Bermuda Race and 1951 Transatlantic Race.
The Malabars have a permanent place in yachting history; Desiderata was one of only five to be built to design number 0756, and one of two ketch designs to be personally raced by Alden. You can find her specifications here.
Desiderata was built in 1975 in the USA, and sailed by her builder around the world – culminating in New Zealand. She was then purchased by an Australian who cruised her throughout the Pacific. Her current owners proudly live happily on board, year round while chartering throughout the Caribbean and Mediterranean.
Under deck, Desi offers a comfortable, open layout highlightling her breathtaking woodwork throughout.
As one enters from the cockpit, her galley (see more detail in "Galley" section) is to port while wet locker and enormous storage areas exist to starboard.
Just forward, one will find the owners stateroom to port - featuring full double berth that measures over 7; in length. To starboard is a completely updated head.
Entering the main saloon, there is a large dinig table to port that comfortably seats six people. Her nav station is located starboard along with additional berth. Also in the saloon, one will find a 'full-size' Captain’s La-Z-boy saloon recliner, her 32" plasma TV and controls for her Bose surround sound system.
Forward, she has a traditional Vee Berth – fully adaptable to create two single berths or a wide double – with en-suite shower & head. She also has a full size single berth to starboard.
As you will see from the pictures, all of Desi's interior spaces are immaculate!
Desi's galley can simply be described as a gourmet's dream. Aside from her custom and easily accesible storage areas, she features an enormous top loading refrigerator, a three-burner propane stove with oven, double sink and abunddant counter space.
Desi is also equipped with an Echotek 70 liters/hr watermaker that is simple to use and very effective.
As you will see from her current chartering menu she is easilby capable of preparing anything from Lobster Benedict to Fresh Blackend Mahi or Filets of Beef!
