Additional Specs, Equipment and Information:
GERONTIUS was launched in October of 1974. Designed by Bruce Farr and built by Wheeler Boatyard in Auckland, New Zealand, she was made in three layers of cold molded kauri wood. The yacht was commissioned by an avid group of racers in the Auckland area in order to compete for a spot on the initial New Zealand Admirals Cup Team in 1975. Mr. Farr was directly involved in the original construction and launching of the vessel. She was the top performing New Zealand yacht in the 1975 Admirals Cup. In 1976 and 1977 she was raced in the Auckland area and did several races to Fiji as well. In the spring of 1978, GERONTIUS was sailed to Hawaii in order to participate in the original 1978 Pan Am Clipper Cup Off-shore Racing Series. The current owner acquired her in October of 1978.
Since then, GERONTIUS has been raced in the Hawaii area, has participated in the Clipper Cup in 1980, 1982; the Trans Pacific Race from Los Angeles to Hawaii in 1981 and again in 1989. In 1990 she once again participated in the then called Kenwood Cup Hawaii International Ocean Racing series.
Over the years she has been modified in order to improve her racing capability and to strengthen her. In 1982 her forward internal bulkheads were replaced with laminated ring beams. This was done again in the aft part of the vessel in 1988 when it was redesigned for a large, open cockpit with wheel steering replacing the original tiller (retained for emergency purposes). In 1992 a 7 foot taller mast and a 1 foot longer boom were added to increase her sail area and power. Extensive effort has been made to lighten the vessel such as in 1988 replacing a 1,000 pound engine in the stern of the boat to a 280 pound engine further forward and replacing older heavier winches with more modern and lighter winches. In 1996, the old fin keel was replaced with a modern, high aspect keel with a deep bulb. A high aspect rudder was installed as well. At that same time, a halyard cockpit was added forward of the main cockpit to again improve racing efficiency. Recent interior modifications have provided a simple, but functional layout for racing and limited cruising.
GERONTIUS continues to win. In 2003 and 2004, she was the Hawaii Yacht Club seasons points winner for the Friday Night Champagne Series.
