Freelancer has been fully upgraded to new boat standards for rig, deck hardware, electronics & instruments, galley, electrical wiring, plumbing. tankage, bateries, you name it. She is in remarkable condition. Owner has reported upgrade costs in excess of $160K.
Freelancer is a rare find. She is a 1973 Tartan 41 with major upgrades to allÂ her operating systems, electronics, interior furnishings,Â rig and gear. Her owner has been meticulous in addressing every single issue you might question in a vintage yacht. He describes the upgrade project as having taken her down to fiberglass and restored from there.
The restoration was extensive and included a new sub floor and cabin sole in the interior, a redesigned and rebuilt V-berth to provide much more headroom, custom cabinetry in the V-berth, the main salon and the galley, a redesigned head to accomodate tall crew. The entire plumbing system was repalced in 2011 and 2012. The entireÂ vessel was rewired with a new electrical distribution panel.Â A raised cabin top forward of the companionway to give 6'4" headroom, and rebuilt decks. All interior lighting is new.
Her mast was taken down and repainted. A new Leisurefurl Â roller furling boom and Forespar boom vang were installed and a custom fiberglass arch installed to take the mainsheet traveler our of the cockpit and provide a solid support for her new dodger. A new hard top was installed inÂ 2012 to provide protection from too much wind, sea and sun.Â Her standing and running rigging has been repalced.
She was repowered in 2011. Her fuel capacity has been upgraded to 155 gallons in new stainless steel tanksÂ to extend her cruising range.
Her interior fit and finish is easily comparable to a new Tartan yacht.

The cockpit is large enough to allow free movement, but secure enough to ensure a high degree of safety in an active seaway. The photos illustrate that it is enclosed on the forward and side panels. The aft is open. Cockpit cushions add to overall comfort for crew and guests.
The custom fiberglass arch, just above the companionway, serves as the main support for the large dodger. The visibility is wide in scope and the view is clear. Side panels can be completely closed or opened up with custom inserts. Instead of a canvas bimini, Freelancer has a custom designed hardtop adding more secure cockpit conditions in more active weather conditions.
You will appreciate that all lines are led aft. There is no need to venture on deckÂ as you can safely trim the sails from the cockpit. All the running rigging is new.
The helm has navigation instruments mounted on the pedestal along with the Ritchie compass. Your GPS coordinates and radar screen are on the RL70C Pathfinder Plus display. Just below are the Raymarine ST60+ Wind Speed and Direction indicator, the Raymarine ST6002 autopilot control and the RaymarineST60 Speed and Depth indicator.
Cockpit speakers will let you add your own sailing music to the mix.
Sails and Rig
Freelancer's mast has been removed and serviced, including being repainted. The classic boom arrangement has been replaced with a LeisureFurl boom furler and Forespar boom vang. Â The mainsheet traveler has been relocated to the top of the custom fiberglass arch. It is noce to have it out of the way and easily manageable.
The mainsail is in close to new condition. The standing and running rigging were recently replaced by Pacific Offshore Rigging of San Diego. She is also equipped with a Navtec hydraulic backstay tensioner.
The headsail assembly is a Schaeffer System 3100 roller furler.
The mast is keel stepped. Spar Tight mast penetration on deck.
The owners' stateroom on Freelancer has been redesigned to lower the berth and make it generally more accommodating. The original design made it necessary to climb up and into the berth. Not any more!
Well lit and ventilated, you can settle down with a good book at anchor or bed down for a good night's sleep. The fit and finish is superb. Notice the large (huge) drawer under the berth. This was custom built to allow high volume storage and ease of access.
Both the port and starboard settees in the main salon can double as sea berths for full size adults. Underway, sea berths are often preferred by the crew.
Large quarter berths are located on both the port and starboard side of the yacht. They are easily accessible and will accommodate above average sized crew. On longer cruises they could double as added storage for extra sails or general provisions.
An added feature on this Tartan is the extra headroon afforded by the remodle of the main salon and corridor forward. The original design was less generous, but it is nowÂ more than you will ever need. It also contributes to the sense of spaciousness in the interior.
You will be impressed with the fit and finish aboard. The interior condition rivals new production yachts and will impress family and friends with your appreciation for fine workmanship.
There is no need to compromise on meals and nutrition aboard Freelancer with plenty of counter space for meal preparation, you can handle everything fro quick fast food snacks to full course meals. The galley stove is a princess Gourmet II 3-burner LP gas range with a thermostatically controlled oven. Two LP gas tanks are stowedÂ in a custom container on the stern rail.
With plenty of room for dry storage and Isotherm refrigeration (DC) you can provision her for either short coastal cruising or longer, more ambitious adventures.
Fresh water can be a luxury.Freelancer's freah water is replenished at sea with a Spectra water maker. Her fresh water pump feeds faucets from an accumulator tank. No waiting!
It is also nice to have the headroom in the galley to be able to function freely without bending over all the time.
Freelancer was re-powered in 2011 with a Yanmar 3YM30 diesel engine. Located immediately aft of the companionway stairs, it is easily accessible through a convenient hatch. Servicing the engine is far easier with this arrangement.
The fuel tanks were upgraded in 2005 from 40 gallon capacity to 155 gallons . There are three stainless steel tanks: 2 60 gallon tanks are located aft and another 35 gallon tank is located under the port settee in the main salon. The fuel system included dual Racor fuel filters for added reliability.
12 volt power is provided by four sealed 6v and one sealed 12v battery located beneath the chart table.
Freelancer is equipped with a Xantrex Freedom Marine 25 inverter, two DC ammeters, a Heart interface Link 1000 inverter monitor and bot AC and DC voltmeters.
Freelancer is offered for sale with an Achilles inflatable tender mdel LSI-104 equipped with an 8hp Honda four stroke outboard engine.

Freelancer is equipped with a Power Winch â€œfree fallâ€ windlass with a foredeck foot switch and remote cockpit control. Her main anchor is a 20KG SL Claw with chain and rode.Â Two additional anchors serve to secure her in unusual anchoring environments.
Her 4 person offshore life raft is mounted on the foredeck.
Aluminum toe rails are very convenient when securing any running rigging equipment like blocks or preventers.
A stern ladder serves to make use of the included dinghy more convenient at anchor. Fun for exploring tucked-away coves and secluded beaches.
Her previous owner remodeled the head so he could stand up in it. Notice the abundant counter space! It is nice to have plenty of storage space to stow your personal toiletries instead of having to constantly work out of a shaving kit or equivalent travel kit.
With enough room for a grown crew member to shower, you won't have to compromise personal hygiene just because you are aboard your sailing yacht.
