SHIRLEY is a very handsome lobster-style picnic cruiser built in 1973 by Frank Day, Jr. and designed by Arno Day of Brooklin, Maine. She was built originally for the renowned childrens' book author Robert McCluskey. In 1992 she was given back to the builder as Mr. McCluskey was physically unable to continue boating. In 1992, Frank Day, Jr. stripped her from the rails up, replacing deck beams, decks, pilothouse, trunk cabin and sistered several frames. A new engine was installed in 1994. During this time, Frank Day, Jr. used her very lightly in the Brooklin, Maine area, but she was photographed extensively and appeared in the Wooden Boat Calendar and later in the book on Wooden Power Boats. Since then, she has had two owners. The last owner purchased her in 2001 and made numerous improvements. Since then, her present owner purchased her in 2007 and has continued with the numerous improvements and upgrades (see above). She is reported to be a very seaworthy vessel, and is elegant in her understated simple, classic lobster-boat lines. We recommend her highly for one who wishes to "mess about" in a first class, wooden boat on the Maine Coast. SHIRLEY shows very well. | ||
