A Unique, Custom-Built, Luxury Trawler!
TIPPERARY is one-of-a-kind vessel, inspired by the creative genius of Vard Wallace, noted innovator and inventor. She was professionally built using ferro-cement construction by Samson Marine (facilities in British Columbia and Tacoma, Washington), launched in 1973. Her Gardner 6-cylinder LXB diesel, known for tremendous longevity and fuel economy, is in excellent working condition. Her interior is absolutely stunning.
Ferro-cement boat-building is a technique with over 100 years of history. The Steel-Reinforced Plaster (SRP) technique, as used here with 3/16" stainless rod and copper-nickel mesh as the framework, is well-known for longevity and durability. Interestingly, the weight of such a boat is actually equal to similar length/displacement boats built in fiberglass or wood. TIPPERARY's hull is smooth and fair, a credit to her sound construction and the perfection of this long-standing technique by Samson Marine. John Samson was an innovator of ferro-cement boatbuilding, having built over 200 boats with this technique.
Vard Wallace has a long track record of innovation and technical development. All the fittings on TIPPERARY were cast in bronze in his own foundry. His impact is found throughout the boat. He is known for development of the VARD motorcycle and he holds the first patent for telescopic forks, used today for the suspension system on modern motorcycles. During WWII, he developed an array of new parts for airplanes and helicopters.
TIPPERARY's large, variable-pitch propeller will drive the boat to 10 knots, with 8-8.5 knots the most effective cruising speed, consuming a miserly 1.5 gallons/hour of fuel at cruising speed. Her engine room is an amazing place, with easy access to a variety of systems that drive this luxury craft.
Her equipment list includes Vospar stabilizers, cruise generator, water maker, full-size washer/dryer, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, trash compactor, and two stove oven appliances (diesel and 110V). She has dual steering stations, new stainless fuel tanks (850 gallons total capacity), and 350 gallons of fresh water tankage. Her LUND dinghy with 30 hp Honda outboard is kept on top, with a hydraulic winch on the boom for easy movement to and from the water.
If cruising in the style of Humphrey Bogart and The African Queen gets your dream machine running, be sure to come see this truly amazing yacht!
