Blue Chips Refit Details
The entire interior was gutted and rebuilt: Burmese Rosewood plank flooring throughout vessel except that the Teak and Holly Cockpit Sole was preserved and refinished.
All vertical walls and bulkheads had wall and ceiling coverings replaced with soft leatherette with identical appearance to ostrich skin in medium tan color.
The 4 person dinette opposite the galley was replaced by a table that lifts to secure against the starboard salon wall for access to a new in-floor storage area for canned or packaged pantry goods. The dinette benches were recovered with dark blue genuine buffalo hide. The dinette table surface is African Macassar planks with surrounding teak fiddles. The ceiling covering in the main salon and all staterooms is also covered with faux ostrich skin.
Under the guidance of Naval Architect, Alan Andrews of San Diego, an aircraft aluminum I Beam was installed amidships, running fore and aft, to support the overlying aft deck, and heavy guage 4x4 oak gallows were installed under the main salon floor and cockpit sole to support the stainless poles fixed between them and the I Beam running fore and aft and to support the custom stainless hydraulic crane mounted on the aft deck for hoisting aboard the Zodiac and any heavy supplies, as needed.
Custom made teak hanging wine rack cabinets were installed above the custom black granite galley counter, and more wine storage was added facing aft into the main salon under that granite counter. The one-piece large granite countertop was lifted aboard during reconstruction by the aft deck crane.
The galley was refitted with a new microwave, refrigerator freezer w/ icemaker, and new trash compactor, dishwasher, and garbage disposal with new twin stainless sinks. The German Gaggenau cooktop and oven utilize both propane and 220v electricity. This very functional galley was designed by the Cordon Bleu-trained owner for Gourmet cruises.
In the main salon, hatches were installed in the Rosewood floor to provide overhead access to both Twin Disc U Drive transmissions. An in-salon remote access starter switch for the secondary diesel 10KW generator under the cockpit sole was installed for convenience under the aft bar sink. Additional generous storage space in the main salon is found behind the large sofa and cabinets under the aft bar sink and entertainment center, extending forward all the way to the galley on the port side. As well, new storage space was created under the dinette bench seats.
In the owners’ port side stateroom a queen size bed was built in athwartships, with built in storage compartments under both sides, and the entire aft bulkhead in the stateroom was fitted with custom made teak cabinetry including a secret sliding section that opens to reveal a safe that no one could find. A remote TV and DVD player were added mounted facing the bed on the interior wall. Built in bedside tables with drawers and cabinets under have been added on both sides of the master bed.
Escape hatches and wall-mounted escape ladders are located in the master head and in the forward stateroom. All critical areas in the vessel have been fitted with intercom phone sets (4). Numerous in-floor hatches were added for bilge and plumbing access along the length of the fore and aft passageway connecting all staterooms. Multiple additional bilge pumps were added throughout the vessel. All new plumbing exists throughout the vessel with 2 full baths in master and central guest cabins and a half-bath in the forward cabin which has access to the guest shower as well.
In the wheelhouse, all surfaces were returned to original condition with polished teak restored to its inherent beauty. The 3 captain’s chairs at the wheelhouse helm console are covered with buff and dark blue genuine soft buffalo hide, and anchored to the wheelhouse Rosewood floor with attachments that can be unfastened to turn around to face the chart table where formal dining is often held. Seating in this manner is for 6. The wheelhouse bench seat is covered as well with buff suede genuine leather. Heavy guage hurricane glass replaced the old windshield panels for safety in heavy seas. Large stainless steel wind scoops were added to both foredeck panels forward of the windshield for enhanced natural air ventilation of staterooms on demand.
A new 100 gal blackwater tank was added to the tankroom under the main salon floor, as well as 3 new central air and heat units in the same location. All tankroom electrical devices and panels are new, as well as a new water heater and all new water pumps. The 50 gph water maker was completely rebuilt and has all new filtering membranes. It is located in the starboard engine compartment, but also has a remote start switch and salinity monitor. The foredeck anchor winch was rebuilt and a remote start switch installed on the wheelhouse console. The transom mounted stern anchor winch was also rebuilt. A beautiful custom built polished stainless steel breastplate was added to the bow below the bow rollers. The aftdeck mast lowers hydraulically to permit passage under bridges. All hydraulic lines have been renewed.
A fixed custom-made hardtop flybridge was added to replace the prior existing soft Bimini top. The new flybridge was also fitted with Eisenglass and canvas surrounds. An additional Raymarine E-120 Navigation system was installed on the flybridge helm. An identical unit on the wheelhouse bridge communicates with the flybridge unit, and either can be designated master or slave unit. Spacious storage cabinets are located under the helm on the flybridge and under the custom made built-in surround bench seats. The galley propane supply tanks are housed under the aft flybridge bench for safety.
On the aftdeck, a custom built cabinet houses the propane cooking grill. This cabinet features an ingenious foldout mechanism that converts the top and side panels into an attached serving table adjacent the grill with built-in pull out storage rack and lower storage cabinet for spare propane bottles and grill accessories/supplies with an additional built-in icemaker. Also on the aftdeck is a corner storage bin for dive air compressor and bottles.
The custom-built stainless steel telescoping hydraulic crane is carried amidships, and functions as a support for a large aftdeck canvas sunshade, when it is raised for that purpose to facilitate outdoor entertainment or for protection from the hot summer sun. Remote outdoor speakers for the entertainment system have been built in port and starboard for outdoor enjoyment. Forward of the aftdeck grill cabinet, there is a bench seat and dining table that folds down for storage when not in use.
The 12 foot Zodiac seats up to 8 persons. Its pontoons were replaced new in 2014, and the 50 hp Honda outboard was completely overhauled at the same time. The cockpit fishing pole rack contains 3 new heavy duty deep sea fishing rods with new heavy duty reels and lines. Approximately 150 assorted new and antique fishing lures go with Blue Chips. The fishing equipment alone is worth several thousand dollars.
Blue Chips can sleep 6 persons in her 3 staterooms, but an additional 6 can sleep comfortably: 2 each on the large padded engine compartment covers in the cockpit, 1 in the Captain’s bunk in the wheelhouse, and one adult (or two children) on the flybridge bench seats.
Upgrades to all electronics are too numerous to list. The twin Caterpillar D 343 TA diesels are commercial engines are rated for 25,000 hours before recommended overhaul. They have 5,600 each total hours from new on them and should last for the lifetime of the vessel. At 900 rpm, they burn 3-3.5 gallons per hour each, moving Blue Chips at 9 knots. They have been inspected within the last year and found to be in as new condition. These engines make Blue Chips remarkably economical to cruise, especially for a vessel with a 20 foot beam and almost 65 feet LOA. She draws 8 ½ feet fully loaded.
Many more upgrades and additions have been made, and she is kept in top condition year round with regular scheduled maintenance and attention to brightwork. Blue Chips is easily the finest William Garden-designed, Vic Franck-built vessel in existence. She has never sustained any significant damage whatsoever. Over $1.5 million was spent on her total hull-up rebuild and refurbishment. Every time she has been inspected by a marine surveyor, when hull fasteners were drawn for inspection, they have been found to be in pristine condition and simply put back in her double-planked Alaskan Cedar hull. She is unique in her beauty and condition and offered for sale only with great reluctance.

Below decks the vessel has a traditional layout. There is a chain locker in the forepeak where anchor rode/equipment is stowed. A bulkhead separates the chain locker from the forward stateroom. This stateroom has a large single berth on each side with opening portlights above the bunks. There are storage lockers beneath the bunks and an access panel to the bilges in the cabin sole.
Moving aft, there is a shower on the portside separated from a head compartment by an opening glass hatchway. An enclosed head with sink is opposite in the port side of the vessel. In the passageway between these areas is another access panel through the cabin sole. Opening this access panel reveals the plumbing systems for the marine sanitation devices, bilge pumps, shower drains, and some electrical circuits. The floor members, keelson, and some frames are accessible to inspection here.
Continuing aft there is a guest cabin to starboard with two single berths and an ensuite head. Across the passageway is the owner’s cabin with a queen‐sized berth and an ensuite head, tub and shower. Both the guest cabin and the owner’s suite have two opening portlights through the hull sides.The passageway continues to lead
aft to a set of steps that lead up and aft to the saloon.
The saloon has a dinette booth in the forward starboard corner. Adjacent to that booth and leading forward is a set of steps leading to the wheelhouse. To port of the dinette is the “U”‐shaped galley. A nice breakfast bar separates the galley from the main sitting room of the saloon. The galley is spacious organized and well equipped with lots of storage. A settee lies aft of the dinette along the starboard side of the cabin while a television/entertainment center is on the port side. A large sliding door open aft to a covered deck area with two double berths built in atop the engine hatches. This room is enclosed with isinglass panels. Access to the swim step is through gates in the transom, port and starboard. A ladder rises from the port side of the aft deck towards the boat deck above the saloon. An additional ladder runs up and aft from the wheelhouse to the boat deck. A hatch in the saloon sole leads downward into the central bilge that houses the fuel and water tanks as well as the gear boxes for the engines, air conditioning and sewage machinery. This vessel’s engine room is in the lazarette. There are access hatches in the “bunks” on the aft deck for servicing the engines and performing preventative service checks and services.
