The Hinckley 38 is a beautiful S&S design that sail like a dream. She is very well balanced and with the roller furling genoa, it is very easy to short hand sail.
Accommodations below are spacious (for a boat built in 1970) and everything about the boat says comfortable cruising.
She is a mast head sloop with 6000 llbs of ballast in the keel. She has a fin keel with the rudder mounted on the skeg.
There were only 28 boats built so they are very rare and this is a great opportunity for you to have a look at one of these very desirable boats.
In the 1960's and 1970's Hinckley yachts were probably the most recognized name for beautiful sailboats and "Harpertszoon" is no exception. The quality of workmanship and overall eye appeal was not topped. The attention to detail and functionality of every part was considered. She is one of the last Hinckley 38's built so all of the "kinks" in the design that might have been an issue were worked out before the boat was built.
The sail plan is very standard sloop rig with a full genoa and total sail area around 618 square feet and a draft of around 6' that really sails well. When first built, the concept of a "Trim Tab" was being tested and was thought to be a clever idea, so many had the trim tabs installed.
By installing the engine in the middle of the boat under the floor boards, all of that weight is helping to stabilize and balance the boat under sail or power.which takes full advantage of the
Storage areas are abundant in the cockpit lockers, below the companionway, in the galley, in the main cabin, in the forward cabin, so you can easily go for a day sail or spend a month on the boat.
The electronics are not the latest, but work well for navigating the Chesapeake Bay and beyond and can definitely keep you out of trouble. The sails are cruising sails and are serviceable but I always recommend you have them inspected by a qualified sailmaker every year for normal wear and tear. With the roller furling genoa and lazy jacks on the main short handed sailing is accomplished more easily.
Down below the "U" shaped galley is well laid out with the 3 burner gimbaled stove and oven on the port side; a bread storage locker; galley sink just to port of the companionway; spacious counter tops (and a step for the companionway), a large refrigerated ice box on the Starboard side; and storage lockers and shelves for galley gear all around.
Hinckleys of this generation did not usually have a "Nav Station" as such and "Harpertszoon" is no exception. Forward of the galley is the comfortable main cabin with the 10' 6" beam with upper and lower bunks on both starboard and port sides. A drop down table for dining can easily be lowered or folded out of the way.
Forward of the mast is a head on the port side with showerhead out of the sink and a tank watch monitoring system for the holding tank.
The forward vee berth has an insert to make the forward berth extra wide and comfortable.
