The concept of the Tartan 37' classic was inspired by Ted Hood, who built approximately 15 37' hulls that were designated as the Blackwatch 37. Alida is #16 and is the first of a series built by Douglas and McLeod who refined the design. The new name was the Tartan 37 Classic.
The present owners have professionally upgraded Alida in all areas including the hull, deck, interior, and most recently, a new Yanmar diesel in 2012. Alida is easy to inspect in Rockport, ME. Sleeps six in six berths. Starting in the bow, there is a double access door to the chain locker. Port and starboard vee berth with 2 opening ports and an overhead opening deck hatch. Sail storage is available below the berths. There are port and starboard storage drawers located under each berth as well as opening locker doors. Port and starboard reading lights. There is direct access to the wash room that is provided by a privacy door. Area includes an opening port, overhead cowl vent, Wilcox manual marine flush, vanity with hot/cold water, hand-held shower wand. A second door provides access from the main cabin. There is a large, deep enclosed hanging locker opposite the wash room; this is followed by an enclosed locker with several storage shelves.
The spacious main cabin has a "Herreshoff" type finish; varnished teak trim with white flat surfaces. Plenty of ventilation is provided by three opening ports and an open companionway over the aft galley.
There are port and starboard pilot berths as well as port and starboard settee berths that pull out to increase the sleeping areas. Each settee has three pull-out drawers that are located under the pilot berth. Interior cushions are blue with a combination of ultra suede and sunbrella materials. For cabin comfort, a Dickerson wood fuel heater is installed in the forward starboard bulkhead.
Moving aft on the port side is a custom built additional storage cabinet with drawers and a convenient counter top with cutting board. A split galley is aft of the cabin. To port is a CNG range with oven, single stainless steel sink connected to hot and cold pressure water. There are ample shelves for galley storage. The cold machine is top loaded and is located aft to starboard.
Hull and Deck
Tartan 37s feature a long, low profile with a low cabin house and graceful overhangs at each end. Alida has a long full keel with protected rudder; topsides are blue with a white boot top and red antifouling paint on the bottom. The side decks are quite wide and user friendly. There is a large cockpit with natural teak capped cockpit seats and tiller steering. All exterior trim, including toe rails, coamings and handrails are varnished teak.
The present has professionally re-cored most of the side decks and the top of the cabin. The deck was resurfaced with new gelcoat and non-skid. Also, at the same time, the exterior hull below the waterline is reported to have been ground out, with 22 applications of vinylester resin build-up to original hull thickness. The bottom is solid, no voids or delamination. All this was determined in a recent survey.
During the re-build, the cabin ports were rebedded, a new interior head liner was added, all through hulls were repaired or replaced and rebedded. The ship's wiring was also replaced at this time.
Alida has bow pulpit and stern rail, double white vinyl life lines with port and starboard boarding gate.
12 volt system, two 4D gel cells (house),one group 27 AGM (engine starting). Three rotary battery switches, link battery monitor, engine alternator. Dual DC switched breaker panels, properly wired as noted in the recent survey.
A new Yanmar 3YM30-3 cylinder, fwc diesel was installed in July 2011. Very low hours with dual fuel filter system. Packless shaft seal stuffing box, 3 blade 15 RH-11 propeller, 1" shaft fuel tank is located beneath the cockpit sole. This is estimated to hold 20 gallons. Fresh water tank is built into the keel, capacity unknown. Rule 200 GPH electric bilge pump. High capacity manual bilge pump located in the cockpit.
Spars and Rigging
Keel stepped aluminum spar, recent standing/running rigging. Round profile aluminum boom. Two Barient 22 cockpit winches. Two Barient #40 two speed cockpit winches. 2 winch handles. Harken traveler system mounted transverse in the cockpit. Spinnaker pole.
Pope sails: 130 Genoa furling headsail that was new in 2012. Other sails include: main sail in serviceable condition, 100% jib in serviceable condition, 95% jib in serviceable condition, and a storm jib that was lightly used. There is a main sail cover.
Bulkhead mounted compass with inclinometer; Icom VHF M-54, Raymarine ST 4000, Raymarine ST 40 Depth, Raymarine ST 40 Speed, Raymarine ST 40 Wind, Raymarine pathfinder plus SL-72 radar and plotter.
Simpson Lawrence 555 manual windlass; closed cell cockpit cushions, cockpit dodger, life sling with case, yellow horseshoe, CQR 35 lb anchor, 100' of 5/16" chain, 200' of 5/8" twisted nylon, Danforth 35 lb. anchor, 30' of 3/8" chain and 35' of 3/4" twisted nylon.
