She was constructed to Llyods A1 offshore standards as well as Llyods A1 Ice standards. She has circumnavigated at least once and her counterparts (other Laurin Kosters) have many unique offshore experiences under their belts. While rare in the USA, Laurin Kosters have a large following in Europe and owner’s associations can be found on the internet. Mistral’s designer, Arvid Laurin, was well known naval architect who designed many meter style race boats as well as competent cruisers such as his popular 32’s. Although she is only 32 feet overall, her appearance and feel is of a much larger boat. She is 28 feet on the waterline and draws about six feet. Her deep bilges give her a good amount of room below decks (six plus feet of headroom) and she has a very steady motion at sea. Mistral’s cabin layout is traditional and features a large V berth, enclosed head (starboard), two large hanging lockers (port), two settee berths, Galley (port) and proper, chart size, nav station with quarter berth to starboard. Her interior wood-work is in very good shape and has been changed little from original. There is no formica, even her galley counter is varnished teak. The cushions are in good shape and her lockers/bilges are clean. On deck there is a large amount of storage in the lazarette and cockpit lockers. Her deep cockpit provides both safety at sea as well as protection from the elements. I have sailed Mistral a great deal on the coast of Maine in the early and late winter and can attest to her comforts beyond those expected for summer gunkholing. The story of one trip, an Easter cruise in Maine, was featured in Blue Water Sailing, May 2004. Included with Mistral is a lot of gear. There are most of the parts to a self steering system, multiple anchors, and lines, two VHF’s, a good RADAR, a cockpit awning, wind scoops, and possibly a dinghy. | ||
