Illingwoth Bermudan Sloop
John Illingworth was one of the great English yacht designers particularly noted for his racing yachts. His 2 books, Offshore and Further Offshore were the bibles of the day for the racing yachtsmen and are still relevant today.
He worked closely with the Soutars Yard in Cowes and L’Abbe in St Malo and with both yards he developed construction methods which give the maximum strength for weight as well as speed.
His yacht designs are very recognisable usually featuring a cut-away fore foot, generous freeboard, low profile deck structures and raked transom stern and proved very successful. So many of the great racing yachts of the 1960’s were John Illingworth designs.
They are invariably built using the cold moulded technique of laminating thin layers of wood, usually a mahogany, each layer laid diagonally to the previous using resorcinol glues to give a monocoque structure which was then reinforced with internal frames and stringers resulting in a hull which could take terrific punishment in a sea.
This yacht was built for a director of Soutars, the 3rd race yacht he commissioned from Illingworth and came 3rd in Class in the 1965 Fastnet.
Cold moulded mahogany hull with laminated mahogany frames. The main frames are laminated as ring frames with extra deep laminations in the throats down in the bilge to take the keel bolts making a very substantial back bone.
Lead ballast keel secured with bronze keel bolts.
Swept teak deck, secret fastened over a ply sub deck.
Low profile stepped coach-roof leaving wide side decks. Varnished mahogany coamings, modern Lewmar fore hatch on the forward end.
The generous freeboard allows a deep safe cock-pit which drains directly out through the transom.
Wheel steering on a pedestal with cables to a short tiller arm on the rudder stock through the raked transom.
Midships structural ply bulkheads take the loads of the deck stepped mast with steel ring frames to spread the loads round to the high stressed chain plate areas.
The bermudian masthead cutter rig on a deck stepped Sparlight aluminium mast is typical of the rigs developed by Illingworth with a masthead/stemhead outer stay, an inner fore stay part way back the fore deck to the upper spreaders and even a lazy baby stay for extra forward support.
The yacht is now fitted with a roller furling genoa and is generally sailed as a conventional masthead sloop with the inner staysail fore stay converted to a lazy stay, removed when not needed as a cutter.

The compartment is isolated from the saloon cabin by a second door in the bulkhead which provides the mast support thus making the ablutions compartment accessible to either the saloon cabin or the fore cabin.
