If provenance and history had a quantifiable value Lady T would be the most valuable craft we have ever listed. Lady T is a Levi Trident. First conceived by the most famous powerboat designer, Sonny Levi, in 1961, Lady T was built in 1963 by the venerable, top quality wooden boat builder of the time, R & W Clark Ltd in Cowes. The builder was apparently able to boast that they were By Appointment to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. That same year another Trident constructed by Clarks won her class in the 1963 Cowes-Torquay Powerboat Race. Lady T was commissioned for custom build by an aristocratic titled owner and fully British Registered from Day One in May of that year. Since then, the current owner retains an amazing history file documenting most changes of owners in its life of over 50 years. Any future owner will be buying into an amazing heritage of the very best of Deep-vee British Powerboating history.
Tridents were constructed within the heyday and cutting edge of the most serious yacht construction. Designed for the then almost mythical speeds in excess of 30 knots materials and method of construction were to the highest calibre. The specification of the original build is detailed in the original builders flyer reproduced with the photos.
50 years of use and a long lay-up ashore have now taken their toll on Lady T albeit that she is truly a time-warp example. She urgently needs an enthusiastic and dedicated new owner with a strong imagination and commitment to the legend and history running through every piece of her structure.
The original engines are long gone albeit that the transom is now modified for installation of later AD series Volvo petrols or diesels. Many argued at the time of her design that there were no engines powerful enough to compliment her brilliant hull form but today that can be fully addressed with new generations of many performance engines offering the most exciting performance potential.
To do her justice, the deck must be removed and a new one fitted plus a total refurb of windscreen area, cockpit and cabin interior. It has the advantage of a later, bespoke manufactured GRP helm console and engine box. The good news is that the basic hull construction demonstrates all the signs of the original best quality construction and past owners who treasured what they owned. For a boat of this age her hull including topsides and transom have faired better than expected but, of course, we’d recommend that any traditional surveyor who knows and understands wooden boats should give you an overview.
As today’s Levi dealers for the UK we are proud to offer this craft for sale. It is, however, the wildest card we have ever offered regarding price – so make us an offer. It must find a new home as soon as possible so this will dictate the selling price despite that it has been in the same family ownership for years now and parting with it will be painful. There is some serious responsibility from the vendor to find a new custodian for this irreplaceable slice of Powerboating history. She either needs a seriously committed DIYer or someone who has the budget to bring out her now-faded glory again. With far too many boats of this age and calibre lost for ever inevitably the glorious history and parentage will come Free of Charge to Lady T’s next owner. And for those with a suitable imagination and a budget for the work they will end up owning a boat with the style and character all too absent in today’s fantastic plastic and, properly engined, a boat that will outperform the latest boats in the most demanding conditions.
