Columbia is the first 12-meter America's Cup winner. Built in 1958 for the 17th defense of the Cup, she beat the other contenders, Easterner, Weatherly, and Vim for the right to defend the America's Cup in Newport, RI. She then handily beat the challenger from the U.K., Sceptre, in the 58' Cup Series. She also was a contender in the 1962, 1964 and 1967 Cup series. Afterwards she served as a cruising yacht in California, and trial horse for Sweden in 1977 and was campaigned in classic regattas in Northern Europe and Southern Europe during the 80's and 90's. She returned to Newport, RI in 1997, where she has been in charter service ever since. | ||
