SKYE - #40 is a well preserved Concordia Yawl in beautiful condition.
The merits of the Concordia Yawl are well known. The collaboration between Hunt, Howland and builder Abeking & Rasmussen produced one of the most enduring designs in yachting history, and one that remains sought after today by discerning yachtsmen. Skye is carefully priced to be the best value of all the turn-key, well-maintained Concordias available. If you don't want a project but also don't want to pay a premium for someone else's restoration, you need to see Skye.
SKYE has enjoyed long-term ownership by experienced yachtsmen who have carefully maintained her with an eye toward originality. She is a turn-key, un-molested, very original Concordia that was built in the peak years -- with all the improvements missing on earlier builds. The major expense that all Concordia’s eventually face is the re-building of the centerline structure. Doing it properly without the use of stainless steel rods and plates is expensive – and this work was done on SKYE to the highest standards by Narragansett Shipwrights in Newport, to the tune of more than $50K.
Built in 1956 for the Macleod family she was christened SKYE for their ancestral home; the Isle of SKYE. Four generations of Macleod’s sailed SKYE for 23 consecutive New England seasons including every Bermuda Race from 1960 to 1966.
“There is nothing that can compare to being below in SKYE on a chilly late September evening, when it is blowing hard and you are at anchor in a cove along the coast, the cabin heater glowing with coals, the mellow glow of the oil cabin lamp accentuating the beautiful woodwork, and laying to proper ground tackle” William A. Macleod, 1978. Below on SKYE today is an experience unchanged from these times.
Since the time with the Macleods, SKYE has spent her years in Marblehead Harbor under two owners doing much the same -- plying the waters from Nantucket Sound to the coast of Maine and participating in the wonderful Classic Yachting Regatta circuit and Concordia events . She has won awards for her performance and for her originality. As hull #40 (A&R build #5101), she is recognized for being one of the Yawls built when the fleet was in full stride and all of the improvements from earlier builds were fully incorporated. The quality of her original lumber is second to none.
In recent years the important infrastructure components of SKYE have been addressed to ensure another solid 50 years of gunkholing and classic yacht racing. Her centerline structure was properly re-built to the highest standard by Narragansett Shipwrights in Newport, RI, her bottom was re-freshed with a complete stripping, re-fastening and replacement of any questionable planking, and her power-plant and drive-line was fully re-built and restored to pristine condition. In recent years, SKYE has been used approximately 3 months each season and then stored under cover in her own dedicated shed.

Mahogany tight-seamed planking, bronze-screw fastened to white oak frames and backbones. Varnished mahogany cabin trunk and coamings, varnished locust toerails and handrails. Canvas decks and housetop; self-bailing cockpit with teak seats, lockers, and sole. Both the Decks and Topsides were repainted 2016.

In 2001, Her bottom was re-freshed with a complete stripping, re-fastening and replacement of any questionable planking.
Skye's interior accommodates 4 in a traditional Concordia layout with two fold-down canvas bunks in the forward cabin, followed by two more in the main cabin. Two full-height hanging lockers are forward to starboard, with the head across to port. There are two large opening hatches: one forward - the other in the main cabin a beautifully varnished "butterfly" hatch; four opening ports and six fixed ports.
The Head is forward to port featuring a Blake toilet and compliant plumbing with holding tank and Y-valve for offshore use. Vanity with foot-pump and ventilated storage lockers.
Skye's Main Cabin has standard Concordia settee berths to port and starboard with a varnished drop-leaf table on centerline. Concordia wood/coal stove with original bronze Charlie Noble. Interior is finished with varnished raised panel pine bulkheads and doors, varnished Locust trim, and raw teak sole. The main bulkhead is adorned with plaques from all past Bermuda races. The overhead is painted white. Cushions are blue corduroy.
Galley is aft, featuring a large stainless sink with foot pump, and ice box to port with a water collection tank; and a Luke two-burner LPG stove to starboard. Ample storage throughout.
