“Congar” is a classic wooden 43’ Winthrop Warner cutter-rigged motor sailer, built in 1949 by renowned builder Paul Luke of East Boothbay, Maine. Meticulously restored to original plans secured from Mystic Seaport Museum’s archives by Artisan Boatworks and Rockport Marine. Restored to plans secured from Mystic Seaport’s archives holding the works of naval architect Winthrop L. Warner, the 43’ cutter rigged motor sailor Congar was described at her debut in 1949 by “Rudder” magazine as being, “..built of the finest materials”. Renowned Maine boat builder Paul E. Luke was quoted calling Congar, “quite a boat”. She is very sturdily built to the specifications of a much larger vessel; the scantlings are those of a seventy footer.
With diligent research, Congar’s interior and systems were completely and professionally replaced. The historic builder’s plans, notes and papers are available with this beautiful custom classic yacht. The restoration focused primarily on seaworthiness and comfort with a serious nod to tradition. Though aesthetically gorgeous, she’s a sailing machine, not a showroom piece. This is a boat for a captain, a lover of the sea who desires all the elements of a classic yacht with all the family comfort and safety features available today. Congar has been featured in several articles and given a place among the greatest wooden yachts in Matthew Walker’s wonderful book, “Down Below the World’s Classic Yachts”.
In her well-deck forward, the current owner’s children enjoy a safe perch under sail. The anchor well houses a new Maxwell 1100 series chain-rope windlass. Anchoring is further accommodated through hawse pipes that were purpose-built for ease of use. These lead the rode over stainless rollers mounted athwart the bowsprit. Anchor control is afforded either via cockpit switching or lanyard remote control.
A 32kg CQR anchor is integrated into 250’ of new BBB chain with nylon shock snubber and backed up by a 35# Danforth lunch hook which can be deployed on 250’ of ¾” nylon rode from the Maxwell windlass. The windlass is equipped with a dual chain/rope capstan to allow it to also be used to assist in docking maneuvers. A portable 110v wash-down pump and kit is also included and provides means of keeping the chain pile free of Maine mud!
Her sail plan is based on Wink Warner’s preference for a club footed stays’l cutter. A new Harken cruising roller furling system with new Yankee were installed 3 seasons ago. The self-tacking stays’l is excellent in high winds and the vessel is amazingly comfortable in rough conditions. A previous owner wrote in glowing terms of her abilities during a very rough non-stop passage from Newport RI to Antigua. She currently possesses a new Yankee, a good condition cruising main sail and a good condition 110% genoa for lighter airs along with a serviceable stays’l. The present owner is researching adding a cruising spinnaker or drifter for next season’s cruising in Maine.
Aft of the well deck, spacious decks and sea-going bulwarks make for safe, secure work at the mast and during sail changes. Leading aft, the deck presents a cockpit described by Rudder Magazine as “colossal”, complete with 4 self-draining scuppers. Ample vented cockpit storage space is here along with a twin 5 gallon propane storage locker to starboard. The lazarette houses the Edson worm gear steering rebuilt by Rockport Marine for the large transom rudder as well as the SSB world-band antenna tuner connected to the insulated backstay for voyaging.
Congar’s interior was restored completely from the plans acquired from Mystic. Her systems were also completely and professionally replaced. A full set of images document her restoration and fine joinery right down to the bare hull and up to world class standards. She now boasts 450amps of AGM house power from three 8D batteries, and another bank of AGM Optima spiral wound cranking batteries. A Victron Phoenix inverter/charger provides ample AC power for coffee makers, hair dryers, computers, phones and other creature comforts. Photographs also detail the professional wiring and neat, organized systems. Congar has low consumption LED lighting throughout, including the masthead tri-color.
Recently, the owner added new SIMRAD broadband radar, GPS and chart-plotter below and new NorthStar sailing instruments in the cockpit. She has an Icom VHF with a power commander extension at the helm. Her BMW Marine engine hour gauge is being replaced during her annual layover in Rockland, Maine at the end of this season. The engine itself comes with record of every hour of operation by the current owner and currently shows 1595 hours.
Congar is featured with 2 completely odor-free composting “Airheads” with solar venting, one in the private owners cabin and one in the main saloon. Through hull fittings are thus kept at a minimum and maintenance is simplified. Lockers for tools, spares and comestibles abound throughout the vessel.
Newly upholstered cushions in Navy blue nail-point grace the sleeping and dining arrangements complimented by new luxurious gold embroidered curtains providing guest/crew privacy and comfort in the main saloon. This is further enhanced by the 2nd Airhead for crew/guest use. The main saloon head contains a hot/cold pressurized shower, teak grate and sink as well as linen locker for crew/guests.
Congar’s galley is spacious, fully equipped with a gimbaled Seaward Princess 3 burner gourmet stove/oven and capable of producing a full Thanksgiving feast. A small 12volt marine refrigerator is used as a staging area for beverages and snacks. For cruising, there is a massive cooler/ice chest frame built in the forepeak which is integrated directly into the boat’s gray water system.
The vessel’s forepeak is now strictly a utility area that was formerly the professional captain’s quarters. It now serves as rope locker, pantry, oversized cooler/ice chest storage, and chain locker. Her layout is custom in that the original owner wanted the galley and hired captain forward. This was to allow for a professional captain to prepare the meals and not disturb the owner. This arrangement has worked very well for a family with children or the couple who enjoys sailing with guests. A pipe berth and head for the forepeak would allow this to be a captained vessel again if desired.
Congar’s interior volume is capacious with headroom of 6’6”; a person of physical stature would not be disappointed with living spaces aboard this vessel. All bunks are 6’4” in length; a clever fold out double is to port in the main saloon.
With the galley forward of the main saloon, the dining and seating arrangements are amidships with crew bunks above. The addition of lee cloths would add two additional comfortable berths to the main saloon for a total of four. A hanging wet locker and a private locker are aft in the main saloon, across from the beautiful blue Navigator Sardine woodstove . This provides exceptional comfort in damp conditions and an ambience any sailor or guest would welcome. A clever hidden wood-box resides beneath the heat-shielded “hearth”.
Congar’s plumbing is complete with SuperStor hot and cold pressurized water and gray water system with macerator overboard pump. Deep sinks in the galley and owners head provide great convenience for cooking and washing. The new 80 gallon stainless water tank is serviced and cleaned annually and provides clean, safe water for drinking and cooking. Under the settees, additional plumbing and tankage space was prepared for ocean voyaging. This allows for an additional 160 gallons of water if desired.
The BMW Mercruiser Marine diesel is a 5 cylinder powerhouse producing 150hp. The engine has been carefully maintained with records for proof, including periodic laboratory analysis of engine oil. While this power plant can produce more power than necessary, it is a solid reliable comfort when extra power is needed.
The drive system was further upgraded with new water lift muffler exhaust, new top of the line tension plate and new 1.75” stainless shaft and propeller from H&H in 2010. A new cutlass bearing in 2010 and a new stainless steel prop cage make her a motor-sailer any captain can have ease of mind with, even among the lobster traps of Maine or the crab pots of the Chesapeake.
Congar is a classic and is a joy to her owners. Her primary requirements will largely be management of her marine coatings and whatever a new owner might wish for personal use. Her mahogany hull is truly sound, her systems up to date and her accommodations exceptional . The current owner is a corporate director who is also a licensed 100ton USCG captain and authorizes or performs repairs whenever a plank or a fitting appears to be showing signs of wear. During her restoration, the garboard was removed and her timbers were hale and hearty. This was the moment the owner made the decision to go “all in” and bring this classic back to her former glory.
