Gulvain is an opportunity to own a legendary sailing yacht. Built in 1949 and fully restored in 1991, and again refitted in 2006, this most famous Laurent Giles vintage ocean racer is presently lying in France and is available for sale for a small fraction of the cost spent to restore this historic yacht.
Designed by Laurent Giles, the foremost post war naval Architect in England, Gulvain was the world’s first sailboat constructed of aluminum.
Gulvain is one of the most famous sailing boats in yachting history, and is a two time Trans Atlantic Race winner, and winner of many, many ocean races. Gulvain is featured in books and magazine articles including a 1960’s photo album by Beken of Cowes of the world’s greatest sailboats, “Beauty of Sail” and a 1950’s oil painting by Montegue Dawson, “Ocean Racers”. Gulvain is prominently described in The Encyclopedia of Sailing and is the subject of a book, “Gulvain: Fast off the Wind”, written by John Tassos.
Gulvain is a well know sailboat throughout Europe, the Mediterranean, and North America and has been meticulously restored and captain maintained.
Gulvain has been refit to a comfortable (elegant) cruiser with two staterooms, one forward and one aft, and two full heads. The very comfortable main salon/dining area is entered by a built in spiral mahogany and teak staircase from a smaller deck house (pilot room). The interior is spectacular teak and holly with the original walnut cabinetry in place. The galley is fully functional with new refrigerator, freezer, stove-oven, microwave; and a new stainless steel food prep area with stainless steel sink. Internal tanks carry 200 gallons of fresh water. This vessel is designed for extended live aboard conditions.
The engine is an 80 HP Yanmar Diesel with low hours since it was rebuilt in 2006. Gulvain carries 150 gallons of fuel and a new (2006) Westerbeke 8 KW generator.
Gulvain is outfitted with full navigation and communications equipment including GPS, Loran, SSB radio, and helm station instruments.
Sails are all Hood Spectra in excellent condition. The mast and boom, both new, are aluminum (Isomet) while the running gear and rigging are in excellent condition and straight forward to operate. Gulvain is seriously for sale and is available for inspection by qualified buyers.
