NORTHELE was built by Berthon in 1949 and is a captivatingly pretty yacht as well as being a powerful and rewarding sailing yacht. We have followed her progress down the years and we are delighted now to have been tasked with finding her a new owner to cherish and enjoy her in the 21st century. As with all yachts built by Berthon, records of her build are retained in our Shipyard archives.
The yacht is very good overall condition and in my ownership she has had a series of nautical makeovers.
In 2003 all the paint was stripped off above and below the water line. All timber above and below checked and any areas requiring attention were repaired. Replaced iron fastenings with silicon bronze where necessary. Repaired the stem and replaced the forestay fastenings. Removed the bow thruster and repaired the timber under the skin fitting. Replaced four ribs two on each side of the mast support. She had damage to planking aft on both port and starboard which required planking to be replaced. Then primed the timber above and below the waterline before she was fully painted. Varnished the bright work mast and boom with several coats on each. Serviced the engine and can confirm it is running smoothly to this day.
She had another refit and refurbishment carried out in Crosshaven boatyard in 2008. Stripped out her mild steel superstructure supporting her mast and replaced all oak frames and ribs supporting the steel which supports the mast.. Replaced the steel superstructure with new steel floors made on site by a skilled German trained shipwright. This was fastened to the new oak frames and ribs with silicon bronze fastenings with insulators to stop any action between the bronze and steel. Her hull paint was stripped primed and repainted. Her bright work and mast was stripped and re varnished. Engine serviced and running very well.
In 2012 her deck had all caulking removed and was re caulked. All varnish removed from topsides mast and boom. Re varnished with Coelan coating. Removed the Radar from the mast and simplified the wiring. Since her repairs and launch in the spring of 2013 she is tight and takes little water even when hard pressed in heavy weather.
She is a joy to sail and her performance is truly fantastic for a yacht of her vintage. She comfortably sails at 9 knots on a broad reach and will do 7 knots hard into the wind. She always receives very positive comments wherever we go with her. She is so well balanced there is little weather helm and she will keep on course if you need to leave the wheel. She can be sailed comfortably with just two and sails very well with the main sail reefed. What I love about NORTHELE is how she sails in a seaway with ease and makes very comfortable passage making. Her lines are perfect and she sails beautifully in the lightest of air. She does not have a spinnaker but she has old pictures with her sailing with one. It’s a sail I would recommend for the next owner to improve her down wind performance.
If she does sell it will be a sad day as I have had so much fun with her.
RCD Status: Our understanding is that the yacht is exempt from the essential safety requirements of Directive 94/25EC (Recreational Craft Directive) as she was built and placed into use within the EU prior to 1998.

Description of layout from forwards:
- Forepeak for storing her 2nd anchor, outboard, chain, large fenders etc.

- Port side single berth and opposite this is a double berth with the mast forming part of the double berth layout.
- There is a small hatch with circular window over the double berth allowing more natural light.
- Two small deck glass prisms allowing more natural light into the master cabin/berth area.
- Main saloon has an extendable table bolted to the cabin sole with comfortable seating either side.
- Both can be used as berths with lockers on both sides.
- The heads are accessed from the main saloon starboard side via mahogany door.
- Then there is the chart table on starboard side with a seat on port side with an area in between for the removal of wet gear [Doghouse] before you enter the main saloon.
- Bermudian sloop rig with original spruce spars, stainless rig and running rigging.
- Profurl headsail reefing.
- All rigging was replaced three years ago.
- 5 x Lewmar winches.
- Main new 2014.
- Tri radial roller (1995).
