EMILY MARSHALL was designed by Samuel Crocker and built at the George Gulliford Yard (Saugus, MA) in 1946 for then Commander, later Rear Admiral, naval historian and Pulitzer Prize winning author, Samuel Elliot Morrison who sailed her extensively along the coast of New England and particularly around the waters of Mount Desert Island, ME for many years.

In 2002-2003 EMILY MARSHALL was given a new lease on life by her current owners who recognized the need to preserve this classic yawl not only because of her fine sailing characteristics but also (given her designer, builder & original owner) as a matter of historic preservation.

In the course of EMILY MARSHALL’s 2002-2003 refit / restoration all structural hull and deck members were replaced along with her decks and house, all propulsion, fuel, plumbing, electrical & rigging systems were replaced, and finally her interior accommodations were redesigned and rebuilt in such a way as to have made a major improvement over her original layout. All aspects of the 2002-2003 refit / restoration were by and under the supervision of Brion Reiff of Brion Reiff Boat Builders in Brooklin, ME.

While used primarily as a cruising boat, EMILY MARSHALL does have a very good turn of speed and has often kicked up her heels and surprised other boats with her performance both in formal races such as the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta and informally with boats going in the same direction. Not satisfied to be just comfortable and fast, EMILY MARSHALL also likes to be known as a boat pleasing to the eye and so she is with notable appearances as “Miss August & Miss January” in the 2005 & 2013 issues of the Calendar of Wooden Boats.

EMILY MARSHALL is in extremely good condition and will remain so under her current owners who continue (since 2002-2003) to maintain her in a proper fashion and make up-grades as needed. Admiral Morrison would be pleased and proud to see his old boat today, just as or better than when he last stepped aboard.
