Tiny Teal is a wonderful example of the Rhodes 27 design. She was built in 1939 at the Nevins yard in City Island, NY. The Rhodes 27 was designed as a racer-cruiser for a design competition held by the Fishers Island Yacht Club in 1938. They feature a comfortable interior combined with a very seaworthy hull and great looking exterior styling. Tiny Teal has a great history. She was originally owned by the Bigelow family of the Bigelow Tea Company. The boat was later sold and raced extensively during 1949-1954 where she amassed a record number of ocean racing victories. She won the 1949 SORC, including the final leg, the Havana Race. She also won the Strom Tri-Sail race. She has raced in the Annapolis/Newport Race, the Bermuda Race, the Marblehead/Halifax Race, the Chicago/Mackinac Race and numerous other races. Later she cruised on Long Island Sound and New England. Her rig has evolved over the years having gone from a 7/8ths rig to a masthead rig in 1955. In 2003 she was converted from a sloop to a yawl rig and she continues to increase in performance. Since 1981 she has raced in the Connecticut Governor’s Cup, the Mystic Race, and the Newport Classic Yacht Regatta. In the later, she won the Rhodes Cup in 1981, 1982, 1990, 1991 and 2005 for the first Rhodes designed vessel to finish in fleet. In 1989 Tiny Teal won all three races against six Rhodes 27 sister-ships and was awarded the 50th Anniversary Cup. In 2005 she was awarded the Best Sailboat in the Newport Labor Day Classic Yacht Parade. Between 1995 and 2000 Tiny Teal underwent a major restoration at the Brewer Dauntless Shipyard. She is in beautiful condition and the owner is seeking a qualified buyer to take over the responsibility of guardianship of Tiny Teal long into the future. OWNER FINANCING AVAILABLE | ||
