Originally built in Wisconsin, she was European owned for many years and served in WWII under the British flag. Her seakeeping abilities were impressively demonstrated on her 1983 transatlantic crossing back to the U.S., and an act of Congress restored her U.S. privileges in 1987.
Currently situated to sleep up to 8 owners/guests in four double staterooms plus up to 5 crew, she was also customized with new captain's quarters aft of the pilothouse in 2006. In 2004 her port diesel main was rebuilt and starboard replaced, both now showing approximately 150 hours. Serious 7000 gallon fuel capacity offers an approximate range of 3000 miles at 9-11 knots. Sleeps up to (12) owners/guests in five double staterooms plus up to (5) crew; up to (5) additional crew could be berthed in the focs'le. LAYOUT FROM MAIN DECK, AFT: Very roomy AFT DECK on the fantail offers seating for 20+ persons with a clear drop curtains for all-weather use. Access from here includes either of the walk-around SIDE DECKS, a ladder to the starboard up to the BOAT DECK, and doors on centerline opening into the impressive MAIN SALON.
At 20' long, the MAIN SALON bespeaks a quiet elegance, featuring her original solid walnut paneling and a full-sized wood burning fireplace forward. Stairwells at either side lead down to the owner and guest accommodations; starboard companionway leads forward to the FORMAL DINING SALON, which seats up to (12) guests. With decor in French style, the dining salon features painted, raised paneling covered by rich wall coverings and built-in corner china cabinets. A portside doorway from this area leads aft into the all-modern UP GALLEY amidships, with Hawaiian Koa cabinetry and a door out to the port side deck.
At the aft end of the LOWER DECK, accessed via portside aft stairs from the main salon, is a large GUEST SUITE offering double berth plus settee single, and ensuite head with tub and shower. The second salon stairwell is to starboard and leads down to the three additional staterooms: PORTSIDE GUEST stateroom offers twin bunks outboard; STARBOARD GUEST stateroom offers a double berth outboard. Both of these guest cabins feature an ensuite wash basin, and they share an adjacent GUEST HEAD with full-sized tub and shower.
Forward of the stairwell landing is the full-width MIDSHIPS MASTER CABIN, featuring centerline queen berth forward; built-in storage including walk-in hanging locker; and ensuite MASTER HEAD with whirlpool tub, shower and vanity lighting.
LOWER DECK, amidships, finds the well-located SHIP'S LAUNDRY with full-sized washer and dryer; adjacent PANTRY is well arranged for ample storage. Forward is the CREW QUARTERS, all of which are nicely updated. CAPTAIN'S CABIN has been completely renewed in original paneled style with marble-walled shower/head.
TOP DECK is huge, with much useable space! Forward is the full width RAISED WHEELHOUSE with nav equipment and Portuguese bridge. Aft is a large cabin, recently outfitted as a working ship's office/captain's cabin with queen berth, plus head & sink. Further aft is the BOAT DECK with tender stowage amidships and SUN DECK area with dodger canvas finally aft.
All-modern UP GALLEY includes full-sized Sub Zero refrigerator with freezer; Dacor range and oven with light and exhaust hood; dishwasher; trash compactor; microwave; icemaker; hot/cold pressure freshwater system with handy instant hot water tap; and cabinet/drawer storage built-in throughout. ALSO NOTE: 1990 Sea Recovery SRC 1200 watermaker and massive deep freeze boxes with compressor belowdecks.

12vDC and 110vAC systems with panels; (2) 80kW MWM gensets were new in 1976 and rebuilt in 1990; 12kW Northern Lights genset (1984); starting batteries; inverter system with massive battery bank provides silent power at anchor; dockside electrical inlet with hook-up cable. NOTE 2006 refit included a complete rewiring.
DECKS are teak; teak caprails; anchor with davit and electric windlass; navigation lights; docking lights; deck lights; search light; Coast Guard safety package; life jackets; windshield washer/wipers. NOTE: recent upgrades included new masts; replaced davits to original style (will have hydraulic power); and remade the original seat around the fantail per original engineering drawings.
Mechanical Equipment & Engine Details
MAIN ENGINES were 12 RPH Davey Paxman Ricardo 12-cylinder diesels, 500-hp apiece, that were installed new in 1948; overhauled in 1976. In 2004 the starboard engine was replaced and port totally rebuilt; approximately 150 hours are on them since; an impressive array of spare parts inventory is included. Hynautic engine controls were new in 1985. Alfa Laval hi speed oil/ fuel centrifuge. ALSO NOTE: diesel boiler and hot water zone control heat system throughout the vessel.
Vessel is constructed of steel with teak decks. New bow, bridge, funnel and boat deck done in 1975. Purchased and returned to the USA by the previous owners in 1982, NORTHWIND was further restored to the grace and comfort appropriate to her unique maritime heritage. This extensive restoration included bilges cleaned; fittings serviced; complete rewiring; new hot water heating system; new water, fuel, sewage pumps and systems; and more. Virtually a complete restoration - starting in many cases from the bare steel.
One of the most graceful of the classic motor yachts in the world today, the NORTHWIND returned to U.S. waters after many years of European ownership. Her history has been exciting and varied, serving in WWII under the British flag; cruising the Greek Islands and the romantic Mediterranean; berthed on the Thames and under the blazing sun of Malta; she has graciously hosted Prime Ministers and Queens, world business leaders and Presidents.
The seakeeping abilities of the NORTHWIND were impressively proven on her 1983 transatlantic crossing when she encountered numerous adverse weather conditions, including a full storm off the U.S. West Coast in February of 1983.
NORTHWIND is a uniquely handsome and capable classic, with excellent charter potential, being U.S. built and having had all of her U.S. privileges restored by an Act of Congress in 1987. Her current owners have been carefully upgrading and refitting her since 2003.
