"Petrel" is the finest and best maintained ex-commercial troller conversion the surveyor that conducted the 2013 survey has ever seen. This is a rare opportunity to own a truly turn-key classic vessel, maintained to the highest standards and completely immaculate.
Designed and built in 1928 by Mat Tolonen at the Columbia Boat Works in Astoria, Oregon, her lines show her North Sea heritage. The double ended troller design is known as a second generation Finn boat that fished most of her life from Oregon to Alaska.
When the previous owner retired from commercial fishing, he totally rebuilt "Petrel" as a pleasure cruising vessel and she is in as close to "new condition" as a boat originally built in 1928 can possibly be. Winner of several wooden boat festivals, "Petrel" has been featured in Wooden Boat Magazine, Passage Maker, Soundings and Oregon Coast Magazine.
During her five year rebuild, careful attention was paid to retaining her original lines and feel. All electrical and mechanical systems were upgraded or replaced entirely, and many of the wooden structural members of the vessel were replaced including the bow stem and stern timbers, several planks and many fastenings.
Petrel is a double-ender, with nearly identical bow and stern sections, making her a very seaworthy vessel in the tradition of the boats that fish the rough Baltic Sea. Her wheelhouse is amidships with the helm station forward, forecastle with twin berths down, and galley and seating area aft and down. All exterior hull, cabin and cabin top woodwork is well coated with marine enamel and protected by custom made canvas covers.
Hull material is 1 3/4" Port Orford Cedar & Fir on 2 1/2" x 2 1/8" steam bent Oak frames with silicon bronze screw fastenings. Bulkheads are wood; deck material is 1 3/4" Fir planking.
Petrel's current owner has maintained her in pristine condition while continuing to enhance and upgrade her over the last 24 months with a new electric head; a new touchscreen Raymarine plotter with AIS; sirius weather receiver; new solid brass interior sconces; new exterior deck and masthead lights and new cushions and upholstery in the forecastle.
The seller will convert the two single bunks forward to a full-width lower double bunk and add a port side upper bunk at no cost to a qualified buyer, increasing the total number of berths to four, should additional sleeping accommodation be desired.
