Amels Sells First 188 Limited Editions Superyacht

Amels has completed the first sale of their 188 Limited Editions design, which includes the builders' Hybrid Switchboard with battery power.

Amels shipyard in the Netherlands has sold its first-ever Amels 188 Limited Editions design. The 188 will be the first Limited Editions yacht with the builder’s Hybrid Switchboard with battery power, giving fans of the Limited Editions series not one, but two reasons to celebrate.

And the Amels Limited Editions series does have a lot of fans, all around the globe. Since the Dutch builder introduced the concept of larger yachts designed on proven platforms with owner customizations possible in a shorter amount of time than traditional custom projects, Amels has sold more than 30 Limited Editions hulls, ranging from 180 to 272 feet length overall.

For the new 188 Limited Editions, Amels worked with its parent company, Damen, which has produced more than 6,000 vessels and has been in the news recently for its luxury yacht-support vessels as well as a 183-foot SeaXplorer model introduced at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

“The Amels 188 is a great example of the synergy between Amels and Damen,” says Damen’s sales director, Roland Briene. “It shows how the Limited Editions range benefits clients by not only leveraging the group’s global financial strength for fast delivery and smooth production, but also thanks to the know-how within Damen. Our Damen research department has a huge amount of expertise in hybrid power solutions as well as seakeeping performance.”

The Amels Hybrid Switchboard is designed to work invisibly in the background, combining three energy sources: mechanical (generators), electrical (battery bank) and heat (residual energy). The technology came from Amels’ 18-month research program and is expected to save yacht owners at least $117,000 per year in operational costs—which means faster return on initial purchase investment and lower cost of ownership, in addition to a reduced environmental impact compared with traditional diesel-powered designs.

As with all yachts in the Limited Editions range, Tim Heywood is the designer on the Amels 188. The owner has tapped Reymond Langton for the interiors.

All said and done, the first Amels Limited Editions 188 is expected to be delivered to her owner in less than a year, in time for cruising during the summer 2018 season—a construction feat that would have been unimaginable with traditional, custom-designed yachts of her size just a decade ago.

Rose Damen, commercial director for Amels, says the high-volume yacht will be a world-cruiser coming in at 970 gross tons.

“She has a big beach club, and the owner’s suite folding balcony is quite spectacular,” Damen said. “She also has a unique character that personifies Tim Heywood’s signature lines with athletic, powerful forms. We’re very much looking forward to handing her over to her owner and seeing her on the water next year.”
