Washingtonian: Classic Trumpy

This is one classic wooden boat that’s well-maintained, and in good shape.

Classic wood boats of yesteryear that still float are few and far between. Those in such good shape that they are mobile and can actually be chartered are nearly non-existent. But check out the Washingtonian, a  Trumpy, which is a rare vessel that is still in service today and thus, has defied the odds.

trumpy wood classic

This Trumpy is one of very few wood classics that is not just afloat, but is in prime condition.

Washingtonian was built in 1939 for financier AJ Drexel Paul. She was the 240th Trumpy out of approximately 440 and remains one of only 20 pre-war vessels still in viable condition today. Constructed at the Mathis Shipyard in Camden, New Jersey, she was designed by John Trumpy at the Westervelt boat yard. She is 62 feet long and carries a beam of 16 ‘ 8”, which makes her narrow by today’s standards but fast as evidenced by her winning a race against another, newer, Trumpy a few years ago.

Washingtonian has a sumptuously appointed master stateroom and two plush guest suites so she can sleep six altogether. She also has crew’s quarters for two and has been under the command of a professional captain. Two dining areas are available; one in the saloon, and one outside on the aft deck which is shaded by the extended hardtop and surrounded by Eisenglass curtains. This classy outdoor lounge also offers a conversation nook, perfect for afternoons of long, lazy philosophical discussions.

trumpy interior

The hand-rubbed chestnut interior joinery has been fully restored with varnished raised paneling and mahogany trim in the saloon.

Twin 100 hp GM 471 diesels are the main propulsion in the stand-up engine room. There is also a 21 kW genset, and the aluminum fuel tanks (325 gallons total) have been renewed. The galley is equipped with a new four burner Avanti electric range with oven, a Bosch dishwasher, a microwave oven, an 11 gallon hot water heater, and a full- size LG refrigerator/freezer, so preparing proper meals for guests will be much like at home.

Washingtonian received a complete overhaul in 2010 which restored her wooden hull and updated all electrical and navigational systems. She is US Coast Guard certified which allows her to carry up to 30 passengers and a crew of two, and that means she can be chartered. If you’re looking for a home, a business or just a classy boat to enjoy, Washingtonian is for sale in Virginia and she might just fill the bill—not to mention that you’ll own a classic that will make the harbor take notice.
