Okko: New Trideck Megayacht from Mondo Marine

The seventh trideck of her size from this Italian shipyard, Okko showcases their continuous improvements and customization skills.

Since its founding by two brothers in 1978, Mondo Marine  has delivered 61 yachts, most starting at 131 feet. Okko, its latest delivery, is just shy of 134 feet, and she shares the same engineering platform as six other Mondo Marine tridecks in the 41-meter (134’5”) size range. But, to confuse the similar length and technical systems with a rigid, production-like approach to construction would be a mistake. Mondo Marine makes each of its yachts open to customization in terms of exterior styling and interior design. The owner of Okko took full advantage of this, commissioning a richly appointed home on the water. Just as important, Mondo Marine worked with his captain and crew to ensure both personal and professional comfort for them, too.

Okko was commissioned by a first-time client of Mondo Marine. He selected Giorgio Vafiadis of Studio Vafiadis, who has worked with the shipyard before, to create the customized exterior styling and interior design. The designer and Mondo Marine previously collaborated on launches such as Alexander Again and Toy-A, but Okko has a look all her own.


Essentially everywhere you turn aboard Okko, such as here in the saloon (looking aft), you see sumptuous details. The high-gloss wood is frake, noted for its light yellow tones and straight grains. All woodwork, including the carved details most notable near the TV, was milled in house. Overhead, and surrounding the pop-up TV, is a leather-like fabric made from fish skin.

The décor of Okko is based on a mostly black and white, almost minimalist color scheme. Minimalist doesn’t mean minimal, though, as you can tell. Fabrics such as velvet lend texture, all selected from high-end designers like Fendi and Versace. Okko is a yacht that was meant to make a statement.


Take a close look at the dining table. Thought it may be difficult to see the full details, there are some incredibly intricate inlays that leave no doubt as to the labor intensity. Mondo Marine’s in-house craftsmen made the table for Okko’s owner. The chandelier is equally intricate, custom made by Visionaire, a noted Italian brand.

The mirrored surfaces in Okko’s full-beam main-deck master accentuate the natural light. Two things you won’t see: air-conditioning vents, and a television. The former are hidden in the overhead. The latter is also hidden, as a “magic mirror” TV. Only when it’s on can you tell it exists, within the mirror opposite the bed. When turned off, the high-definition picture disappears and only the mirror remains.

Opulent is certainly the watchword for the master bath. Onyx, frosted glass, and the same high-gloss, dental-like frake wood carvings as seen in the saloon adorn the room. Of course, Okko’s four guest staterooms have beautifully appointed baths as well, though this en suite bath is the largest.

This is one of the two VIP cabins that pair with two twin cabins below decks to comprise Okko’s guest accommodations. Fendi bedding highlights the rooms, and in each an iPad controls the lighting, air conditioning, and entertainment. Even the captain’s cabin, which has a pullman for his young child per his request, is finished to these same standards, a customary approach for Mondo Marine.

What would a proper yacht be without alfresco space? Okko’s sundeck has plentiful sunpads surrounding a hot tub aft. A dining area is tucked beneath the radar arch, nicely shaded as a result. It can be enclosed or left open-air. Thanks to a dumbwaiter forward (not visible, but at a bar opposite a seating area), drinks and meals can be served easily.

Twin 1,500-hp MTUs permit Okko a reported 16-knot top speed and 14-knot cruise. The captain says that the shipyard was “very accommodating” in arranging systems to his and his crew’s particular desires. This included putting fire-pump controls within the chain locker versus the engine room so the engineer could do chain washdowns more easily. It even included equipping the wing stations as full driving stations, not merely docking maneuvers.

With a reported range of 3,000 nautical miles at 12 knots, Okko can bring the most popular cruising ports within reach. Since her initial launch in July, she spent the summer in the Med. Both Okko’s owner and Mondo Marine were keen on exhibiting her at the Monaco Yacht Show, ahead of her formal hand-over at the end of the year.

From the cutting of the aluminum plates for Okko’s hull and superstructure to the creation of the furniture, Mondo Marine executed the major aspects of the yacht’s construction entirely in house. It takes the same approach for all of its builds, which can also feature steel. Mondo Marine’s property in Savona, Italy encompasses nearly 382,120 square feet, more than 102,250 square feet of which is under cover. And, with an 820-ton capacity TraveLift, one of the largest in the Med, the builder has additional flexibility in what it can offer.

Mondo Marine has a promising order book, including a 164-footer that just started construction. And it

was recently granted entrance into SYBAss (Superyacht Builders Association). SYBAss members must be in business for at least a decade, and must have built and delivered at least three semi- or fully custom yachts of 131 feet and larger in that same time period.
