Adventure Yachts is a full service brokerage

We realize there's a sea of details to navigate once a buyer and a seller have agreed on price. You can count on us to assist with marine surveys, engine surveys, financing, documentation/registration and all the details in between.

The Marine Survey

Most insurance companies and lending institutions require a recent marine survey before issuing a policy or releasing loan proceeds -- and they require that the survey be performed by a recognized professional. There are two major Marine Surveyor Accrediting Associations in the United States. One is NAMS (National Association of Marine Surveyors) and the other is SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors). You should contact several surveyors to verify their current fees, which are usually quoted by the foot, and to find one you're comfortable with. We can provide the names and numbers of several reliable surveyors in our geographic area or you can print out a listing of surveyors by state at the web sites for NAMS or SAMS.

Engine Surveys

Although it's sometimes not a necessary expense for sailboats that have seen light use, we always recommend an engine survey on powerboats and older sailboats. The engine survey consists of compression tests and a thorough inspection of the engine's fuel, aspiration, cooling and exhaust systems. Since there are no associations for engine surveyors we usually recommend that our customers have the tests performed by qualified mechanics employed by the local dealer for the make of engine installed on the yacht whenever possible. We know who they are and will be happy to provide names and make the arrangements.

Financing

We help arrange financing, of course, but we really encourage our customers to get this detail out of the way early. We can arrange for pre-approved financing even before you've settled on any particular boat. This allows you to conduct your search with confidence knowing the cash is as good as in your pocket. More importantly, once we've located the right boat your offer will be more appealing to the seller since the contract can be written without a financing contingency. E-mail us for current rates and a credit application.

Documentation and Registration

Whether your boat needs to be documented by the U.S. Coast Guard or simply registered in your state of residence really depends on two factors: whether or not there's a loan on the boat, and your intended cruising grounds. We'll be happy to discuss the details, but the short answers go something like this; if you'll be financing part of the purchase price and/or plan to cruise outside U.S. territorial waters you're going to want U.S. Coast Guard documentation.

Basically, a Coast Guard document is a "federal title." There are companies that specialize in processing the paperwork and pull an abstract (similar to a title search for real estate) to insure that you will receive clear title to the yacht at closing. Current fees for this service run around $500 and we can make the necessary arrangements on your behalf.
